Thoughts on Fantasy Camp – Part 1

Thoughts on Fantasy Camp – Part 1

Recently, I had the chance to experience Dodgers and White Sox Fantasy Camp. I was there working as a subcontracted videographer, so my experience was not the same as if I was a camper. Although I did not have the baseball experience, it was unique and fun to hang out and listen to the stories from these baseball legends. Names such as Steve Garvey, Steve Sax, Steve Yeager, Eric Karros, Jose Vizcaino, Kevin Gross, Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Mota, Bob Geren, Kenny LandreauxRon Kittle, Mark Salas, and Tom Paciorek were all in attendance. Hearing Eric Karros talk about at-bats and situations against certain teams, and certain pitchers, and realizing, I remember these at-bats he is talking about. A baseball fans dream come true.

The stories from the baseball legends, in addition to getting photos with and autographs from these same players you watched growing up, or just a few years ago, is special. However, possibly the greatest part of camp, is the baseball itself. The campers play upwards of  8 to 10 baseball games against other campers in the week. This includes an All-Star Game and a Championship game. Yes, there is a winning team at the end of camp. A couple of the more memorable experiences from the baseball field, while I was filming: Seeing a player make a great play, and having their coach, in this case Steve Sax, go give them a high-five! Another instance, was a player getting a big hit driving in some runs, his coach, Eric Karros was intensely excited for him. Only at fantasy camp.

This camp, and camps like it, are bucket-list type of stuff. For some of the participants I spoke with, it has turned from a ‘once in a lifetime thing’ to an annual event. Campers said they look forward to coming back to the event all year long. They have made lifelong friends and business connections through these camps over the years.

My Takeaways from Camp:

  1. The Chicago White Sox are now my second favorite team. Ron Kittle and Tom Paciorek are two of the funniest guys you could ever meet. Plus Renteria!
  2. I am already getting ready physically for 2020 camp, I want to look good in my Dodgers uniform!
  3. I hope to be able to make it as a participant, I want to play ball. If that falls through, would still be more than happy to work the event again as a videographer!
  4. You should go too, I have included the link below. See you there!
