All He Does Is Win Championships

The Los Angeles Dodgers have recently announced Mark Kertenian as the new Manager of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.  This is a promotion for the third year skipper with the organization. Last season he led the Rookie League Dodgers in the Arizona League to a Championship. This was an encore performance from his rookie season within the system as he helped guide the Ogden Raptors to the 2017 Pioneer League crown. Kertenian replaces Drew Saylor, the Quakes all-time winningest Manager, who in September climbed to the top of the mountain in the Cal League. Winning is expected in the Dodgers organization. Kertenian will have a tremendous amount of talent at his disposal. With his leadership and communication skills, the club at High-A is already in contention in 2019 seemingly.

Mark Kertenian has a calm and soothing presence about him at times, which must help his players. The prospects for Kertenian the last two seasons have been at the rookie league level. The former Cal State Northridge coach will now handle the talent-laden High-A affiliate for Los Angeles. The roster has not even been filled yet, but already there is excitement for the Quakes to defend their title.

Conversation with Manager Mark Kertenian

We had the opportunity to spend some time with the new Quakes Manager at the Camelback Ranch facilities. Mark is as humble and grounded a person as you may find anywhere. When asked about the success that he has enjoyed thus far within the organization, Kertenian is quick to deflect all praise from himself and apply it to his staff and players.

I asked if he felt any pressure this season, or just develop players and trust the processes in place? The Quakes Manager responded, “the task at hand will be for the staff and players, doing what they need to do to fuel themselves and go forward.” The sage instructor continued, “it’s everybody’s opportunity, especially (obviously) from the player’s standpoint, to be where they have been working to be.” No player or coach wants to end his career at High-A Rancho, the focus will be on moving towards that next level, not necessarily trying to win a championship. With Coach Kertenian, the players will get every chance to mature and develop in his nurturing environment.
